The progress of trainees has to be assessed at certain stages, usually on completion of a learning unit. Consequently, assessment procedures and criteria have to be determined and approved by the relevant bodies. Students need to be prepared for these assessments and guided by regular feedback on their performance.
A first step is to define learning outcomes, resp. write meaningful and transparent learning outcome statements. To actually assess the competencies acquired by the trainee through the learning unit, this has to be clearly defined by learning outcomes. The assessment intends to compare what the trainee is able to do with what is expected of him according to the preset standards.
